The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act has passed the U.S. House and is now being considered by the Senate. It would require all Americans to prove their citizenshp status by presenting documentation - in person - when registering to vote or updating their voter registration information. Citizenship can be proven by submitting a legal document proving U.S. birthplace, such as a birth certificate. However, if the applicant's current name differs from that on the birth certificate, then the applicant cannot register to vote. Thus, if Jane Doe marries Bill Smith, then Jane Smith cannot vote.
