On Monday, March 31, our legislature stalled on a bill that would raise the tax threshold for social security income. 50 yays. 50 nays. Total: "don't know what to do."
HB 827: "Revise social security income taxation" would reduce taxes for Montana's seniors. According to Big Sky 55+, "it would reduce income that is free of tax in Montana from $25,000 up to $40,000 for single filers and from $32,000 to $65,000 for married filing jointly households."
Big Sky 55+ supports the bill as a reasonable balance between fiscally responsible revenue streams important to support state services that Montanans rely on, and the challenges of managing basic living expenses for people on fixed incomes.
Nothing is yet decided. So, here's where to vote your opinion: https://www.bigskyfiftyfive.org/take-legislative-action?emci=83437f0c-b50c-f011-90cd-0022482a9fb7&emdi=c34756b3-c70c-f011-90cd-0022482a9fb7&ceid=6525226
