In 2021, Montana received almost $15 billion from the federal government. Some of this funded almost half of the state's budget. Another portion went directly to local governments.
If federal spending is cut back, Montana will have to reduce or eliminate programs. For example, almost one-quarter of Montana public school funding comes from the federal government. Almost one in four Montanans relies on Medicaid for health insurance. Without federal funds, these programs will have to be cut way back.
